Some images from the recent Frans Lanting Spring Workshop.  We had several locals participating and others from as far away as Germany.  Our shooting locations included the UCSC Arboretum, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Elkhorn Slough, Point Lobos State Reserve, Garrapata State Beach, and Asilomar State Beach.  We had an especially good morning on Captain Yohn Gideon’s pontoon boat in Moss Landing.  The weather and light were perfect and Yohn maneuvered us into great position for photographing the abundance of birds, otters, sea lions, harbor seals, etc. Plans are already in the works for a fall workshop in late October.

I had a fantastic time photographing in Redwood National Park and along the North Coast last week.  It was a little odd being there for 4 days and not taking a single shot of a redwood until the last day of the trip.  It just goes to show the abundance of photo ops in the area.  The first 3 days were spent photographing Roosevelt elk, incredible beaches, river otter, fern canyon, and driftwood galore.  The final day brought ideal conditions for forest photography with overcast skies and a light drizzle to wet down the foliage and really make it glow.  Good Times!  Can’t wait to get back and explore some more.

With negative tides happening late in the day, the weekend was spent tidepooling at Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz, and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve just North of Half Moon Bay. Tidepool photography can be especially challenging since most of the interesting activity is happening a couple of feet underwater in dark little pools. Not the best lighting conditions by any stretch.  My goal setting out was to capture tidepool life as part of the surrounding landscape with nice sunset light in the sky. Not too much to ask for I’d say. In 2 days of poking around I found only one pool that set up the way I envisioned. I was able to include the Monterey Peninsula at the south end of the Bay along the horizon line as an added bonus.
